ARTISTIC EQUESTRIAN, LLC

Since the age of four, I’ve been both an artist and an equestrian. My artistic journey began with doodling on restaurant menus and napkins, while my passion for horses started with pony rides at the age of four. Throughout my life, I’ve maintained my love for both art and horses, earning degrees in Fine Arts and Equestrian Sciences. I’ve also enjoyed teaching and managing horse farms in various locations before launching Artistic Equestrian in 2014, aiming to create an Equine and Art Assisted Learning Program. My journey has been supported by a loving family and has taken me to different places, ultimately leading me to where I am today.

Leatherworking

From Hide to Hand: The process begins on the drawing table where I modify and combine patterns with my own, or a client’s idea to create the desired piece. A mock up is then created in board or foam leading to the actual pattern. After sketching and testing dyes on scrap leather, monograms, tooling designs and colors are finalized.  At this point, I am ready to chose the leather and cut the pattern.  Next, I will case and tool designs, run stitching grooves, punch slots and bevel the edges. Once the piece has dried, I use EVOO applied in very thin coats to replace the oils lost in the tooling process. I allow the oil to dry 12-24 hours and then begin the dyeing process, allowing ample drying time between coats of color, resists, antiquing, and resolene finish. The edges of the leather are finished by hand with a five step process including sanding, burnishing with saddle soap, dyeing, burnishing with wax, and application of resolene. I am now ready to mark stitches and complete the project using the traditional hand-stitching method with linen thread. Finally, a coat or two of Aussie conditioner is applied to soften and protect.

Instruction

I love to teach but I quite enjoy being a perpetual learner. Between books, problem solving in the studio and life on the farm, I learn something valuable every day. However, my favorite sources for learning are the students. Those who join me and wish to learn challenge and inspire me with their questions and ideas. Whether it’s modifying an explanation so the student better understands a concept or creating a new bracelet design, I am always learning, thanks to you!

So join me, we’ll have fun and learn a little something in the process.
